NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release
September 21, 2011

Vancouver, BC - The 16th annual Parkinson SuperWalk held last weekend in 13 communities across BC raised $285,000 for research and support programs provided by Parkinson Society British Columbia (PSBC) to the 11,000 individuals who live with Parkinson's disease in the province.

"This was the second year I participated in the Vancouver Parkinson SuperWalk," said Dr. Gordon Rintoul, neurobiologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Simon Fraser University. "I was so impressed by the great number of people walking with such a positive attitude, strength and determination." He added, "I was reminded of why I am so committed to continuing my research into Parkinson's disease and so grateful to PSBC for the grant I received from the organization last year."

"The generosity of our walkers, volunteers, donors and sponsors has been tremendous," said Diane Robinson, CEO of Parkinson Society British Columbia. "Walkers of all ages joined forces with their family members, loved ones, friends and neighbours in a show of support for each other and the cause that is so near and dear to them."

Parkinson's is the second most common chronic neurological disorder after Alzheimer's. Parkinson Society British Columbia receives no government funding and relies entirely on the generosity of individual donors, members, corporations, foundations and the dedicated efforts of volunteers.

There is still time to make a donation. The Parkinson SuperWalk online website will remain open until October 3rd at http://www.parkinsonsuperwalk.ca/ or call Parkinson Society British Columbia at 604 662 3240 or toll free 1 800 668 3330.
