Health Authorities

Health authorities provide a full range of health care services, including hospital treatment, community-based residential support, home health, mental health and public health services.   For seniors and families investigating home support and home care services or long-term care residences, the health authorities should be the first point of contact for advice, guidance and information about accessing these services and residences.

The health authorities provide a number of specific and direct services relating to licensing, inspection and operation of long-term care residences.  Case managers at the health authorities offices assess the situation for each person to determine if an individual needs support at home, in a supportive living environment such as an assisted living residence, or in a long-term care residence.  Health authorities also coordinate waiting lists for long-term care residences and facilities placement.

Health Units

Home and Community Care Programs
See: A Guide to Your Care published by the Government of BC)

As part of your local health authority, Health Units and Home and Community Care provide health care and support services in the health authority region.

A primary goal of these services is to maximize your (or your family member or friend's) wellness and ability to care for yourself.  Services are intended to supplement, but not replace your efforts to care for yourself  with the assistance of your family, friends and the community.

The services that you are eligible for are based on a standard assessment of needs.  Services may be provided on a short or long term basis, and may change as your needs change.

Together, you, your family, and home care professionals create a plan to help you live safely and comfortably at home and prevent unnecessary hospital visits.  Home and Community Care also acts as a bridge between home and other care settings.

Services for eligible clients are delivered by teams of health care professionals in a variety of settings, and may include:
  • Nursing
  • Physiotherapy and occupational therapy
  • Nutrition
  • Social work
  • Case management
  • Home support
  • Adult day programs
  • Community clinics
  • Assisted living
  • Access to residential care facilities
  • Short term residential care for caregiver relief
  • Hospice care
  • End of life care
Due to population size and geographic remoteness, not all services are available in every community. In communities where services are limited, every effort is made to accommodate clients' care needs.

To be eligible for services by a Health Unit and Home and Community Care, clients must:
  • Be a resident of BC for at least 3 months;
  • Be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant; and
  • Require care at home.
