How To Help / Become a Volunteer / Volunteer Group Facilitators needed
July 2010

Are you looking for a challenging and rewarding volunteer position?

Are you interested in providing support to people living with Parkinson's disease?

Please read on!

Parkinson Society British Columbia has a network of 45 self-help support groups throughout British Columbia, all of which are lead by volunteer facilitators.  The facilitator role is often undertaken by a current group member but in some instances the position is filled by a volunteer in the community.

Our groups operate in a variety of ways.  Some focus on discussion, some frequently bring in speakers, while most combine both activities.  There is a great deal of flexibility in the planning process.

The role of the facilitator often includes:
  • Planning the monthly meeting
    • Contacting a speaker, if necessary
    • Preparing the agenda
  • Leading the meeting
    • Introducing new members
    • Reviewing the agenda
    • Introducing a speaker, if necessary
    • Leading discussions and question/answer periods
We strongly encourage facilitators to share the leadership tasks with group members.  In most groups, other members make the coffee, set up the room, call members to remind them about the meeting, take minutes (if needed), and meet and greet new people at the door.

Qualifications:

  • Reliable and responsible
  • Willing to commit to one year of group leadership (total of 10 meetings)
  • Some experience with groups is preferred
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Caring, compassionate and patient
  • A basic understanding of Parkinson's or other neurological disorders is preferred but not essential

Training, materials, support and assistance are provided by PSBC staff.
